Latest Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United News

4th July 2007     Cristiano Ronaldo excited at prospect of playing alongside Nani and Anderson

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has told Portuguese newspaper A Bola that he cant wait to link up with new Portugal-based signings Nani and Anderson. Both players were recently unveiled at Man Utd, with Portuguese under-21 star Nani costing around 15 million and Brazilian under-21 star Anderson costing less at around 12 million.
Both players are said to be amongst some of the best young footballers in Europe, and Cristiano Ronaldo says hes delighted at the prospect of playing alongside the 2 new additions.
Man Utds Cristiano Ronaldo was quoted as telling a Portugal newspaper Im really happy that I will have Nani and Anderson as team-mates. They will be very welcome at Manchester United. Ronaldo went on to say I can only say that Manchester United will be stronger because they have contracted two great players. One thing that we can say is that we cant wait to watch Nani and Ronaldo both playing in the same side next season as United look to defend their Premiership title.
Sir Alex Ferguson has again been looking to Portugal to strengthen his squad, a few seasons ago it was Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon but this time he has gone to Porto to sign Anderson, and has purchased Nani from Ronaldos old club, Sporting. There is now a strong Portuguese presence at Old Trafford, with Carlos Queiroz the assistant manager, Cristiano Ronaldo and now new Portuguese signing Nani.

14th May 2007     Cristiano Ronaldo claims his relationship with Wayne Rooney was never strained

Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed that after the events of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, his relationship with Wayne Rooney was never under any doubt despite all of the media stories claiming the two were at loggerheads with each other. The events took place during the England Portugal world cup semi final, where Rooney was sent off probably for his push on Ronaldo. Ronaldo also appeared to wink at the Portugal coaching bench, much to the anger of the English public. It was thought at the time that Cristiano Ronaldo would never be able to return to Manchester United, or to English football, and that he would have to leave straight away. It was rumoured that Real Madrid or Barcelona were ready to take away the troubled United star, but Alex Ferguson had other plans for Ronaldo. The Manchester United manager persuaded the Portugese winger to come back to England, and that he doesn't have to fear for his safety.Since returning to the Premiership Cristiano has been in top form, despite all the booing and heckling from the away fans. Ronaldo has since said that the booing insprires him to perform more to his capabilities, and that he thrives on all the attention he receives. Cristiano Ronaldo has also stated that he has a great relationship with Wayne Rooney, and that they have a great understanding both on and off the field. Ronaldo has also told reporters that he has simply had to focus on being a professional when being questioned on how he managed to respond so positively following the media's personal witchunt after the World Cup.The season has seen Ronaldo score 18 premiership goals, and he has also been awarded the PFA players award, PFA young players award and now he has also been awarded the football writers award. This has been seen as an ultimate turn around regarding Cristiano Ronaldo's fortunes; at the start of the season he was being tormented by the British media but come the end of the season he has been awarded the football writers award - the award given away by the british media.Cristiano Ronaldo's season has the chance to go up yet another notch when Manchester United take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final this weekend, and could yet be another opportunity for Ronaldo to add some more silverware to his trophy cabinet.

12th May 2007     Jose Mourinho apologises to Cristiano Ronaldo

Fellow Portuguese star Jose Mourinho has publicly apologised to Manchester United footballer Cristiano Ronaldo amidst an unsavoury ongoing feud between the Chelsea manager and Manchester United star midfielder.
Mourinho had previously started the whole argument a few weeks ago, when accusing the Manchester United winger of going to ground too easily, and play-acting to trick the referees. This claim was argued back by Ronaldo and his manager Alex Ferguson. Cristiano replied that Jose should be humble in defeat, and should be able to praise someone and not be bitter about it, accepting when someone has done a better job than him (in reference to Manchester United leading the Premiership over rivals Chelsea). Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho then took the debate one step too far, claiming that Cristiano Ronaldo shouldnt be blamed for his actions due to his generally poor upbringing and education in Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo has ignored this last resort by the Chelsea manager, and since stating this last point Mourinho has publicly apologised to Ronaldo, claiming that sometimes it is easy to be caught up in the heat of the moment and that things are easily exaggerated.

10th May 2007     Man United lose on the day they are crowned Premiership champions

Cristiano Ronaldo was left on the bench for the majority of Manchester Uniteds last Premiership game of the season against relegation strugglers West Ham United. By the time Cristiano Ronaldo was introduced to the game, Man United were already 1 goal down thanks to a persistent Carlos Tevez. The Argentinean midfielder has been in fine form recently for West Ham, and has scored in most of the recent West Ham matches, helping to propel the London based side out of the relegation zone.
Manchester United looked quite a different side against West Ham, with plenty of their first team stars left out or left on the bench due to the upcoming FA cup final against Chelsea in a weeks time. Man United had nothing left to play for after confirming the capture of the Premiership title when Chelsea could only draw against Arsenal a week ago. Man United chose to use this game as a warm up match for the upcoming FA cup final, trying to keep the fitness levels of the players at the best possible level.
Sir Alex Ferguson made a triple substitution midway through the second half, bringing on Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo. This was still not enough to affect the result, as Manchester United were still unable to break through a stubborn West Ham defence. West Ham only required a point from this game, and in the end they were guaranteed safety by securing all 3 points in this exciting football match. Both teams were celebrating come the final whistle, West Ham had guaranteed Premiership football next season and Manchester United could finally get their hands on the Premiership trophy. There was a party atmosphere throughout the match, and at the final whistle the Man Utd players joined in too as the Premiership trophy was presented to the Manchester United players and staff.

05th May 2007     Cristiano Ronaldo Helps United Edge Closer To The Premiership Title

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot today against Man.City as Man.Utd moved within touching distance of the Premiership title. The game ended 1-0 to Manchester United after Ronaldo converted a 69th minute penalty which now leaves Man.Utd 8 points clear of nearest Premiership rivals Chelsea.
The match could have easily ended 1-1 though as Manchester City were awarded a dubious 80th minute penalty when Michael Ball, who had previously conceded a penalty earlier when taking down Cristiano Ronaldo, won his own side a penalty by falling after brushing against Wes Brown. However Edwin Van Der Saar saved an unconfident penalty from Darius Vassel which eventually won the game for Manchester United, and kept them well on track to finishing the season as champions.
The game started out with Man.Utd dominating with long periods of possession, though they struggled when trying to break past a resolute City defence. Cristiano Ronaldo was on the receiving end of a violent stamp by City defender Michael Ball, who clearly stood on Ronaldos stomach much to the disgust of the Manchester United players and manager. Though the City defender escaped punishment from this stamp, Ronaldo won the last laugh when Ball bought the United winger down in the penalty box to result in a Man Utd penalty. Ronaldo composed himself and oozed confidence as he slotted past Andreas Isakksoon, sending the City goalie the wrong way in the process.
Man.Utd started off the second half brightly, but some increased pressure by City paid off when they were too were awarded a penalty after Michael Ball, the culprit for the last penalty, brushed past Wes Brown and lost his balance in the box. Darius Vassel stepped up to take the penalty, but drilled it down the middle of the goal allowing Van Der Saar to save the ball with his legs, the ball eventually going out of play for a corner. Manchester United held on for the win, so now if Chelsea fail to beat Arsenal the next day then Man Utd will be crowned Premiership Champions 2006/2007.

2nd May 2007     Manchester United Knocked Out Of Europe By Milan

Manchester United crashed empathically out of the Champions League last night as they were crushed 3-0 in the San Siro, winning the match 5-3 on aggregate. United took a 1 goal advantage into the second leg of the tie, and only needed to draw to win the game. They played poor throughout the match though, only managing one or two meaningful attacks throughout the whole game. A brace by Brazilian midfield-superstar Kaka and a goal from Clarence Seedorf were more then enough to see off a despondent Manchester United side, sending them out of Europe and ending all possible hope of a treble.

13th April 2007     Cristiano Ronaldo Signs New 5 Year Deal

Cristiano Ronaldo has put all the speculation regarding his future to bed by signing a new lucrative 5 year contract with Manchester United. Due to Ronaldos scintillating form this season, the United midfielder has constantly been linked away from Old Trafford with reported interest from sides including the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan.
Ronaldo will now be on 120,000 a week at Manchester United, making him the highest paid player in United's history. Cristiano is quoted as saying I am very happy at the club and I want to win trophies and hopefully we will do that this season."
Cristiano Ronaldo has been by far Man.Utds best player all season, with his brilliant performances propelling his side to the top of the English Premiership. These displays of talent have not gone unnoticed by Europes top elite, and so with the likes of Barcelona sniffing around United have decided to pin Ronaldo down to a new 5 year contract.
Though this is an obvious sign of intent by Sir Alex Ferguson which shows his desire to keep Cristiano Ronaldo at the club for at least 5 more years, it is believed that the likes of Barcelona are still willing to test Uniteds resolve with a big money bid at the end of the season.
